Does anyone else find it rude when someone includes a quote/verse/etc (that is not their own) into their art's description without properly crediting it?
Shouldn't that artist be recognized too?

I think if it is outside of the music industry (as in, a band's poetry/song lyrics) then yes, most definitely.
I think if it's music-related (a published, mastered song within the entertainment industry) most folks who are interested, would google the verse and discover it that way. I know I would do that.

(I think it's polite and proper to source or credit the creator of the verse(s,) as words are a form of expression, or art, regardless of popularity.)
Now that you've said this, I think I need to source to a song (of which the lyrics I chose to utilize, baha.)
Good pondering!

i personally don't think it's fair to expect people to cite the work themselves using Google or any other search engine. So many times I've liked a song on the radio, just for the DJ to never mention the band name. I don't have data on my phone, so I don't have a search engine at my fingertips. I'll most likely forget lyrics before I get to my computer. Thus, the band missed out on a potential fan and customer. It's so simple to say "by BAND NAME" it seems really silly to me that it's something people sometimes refuse to do. :/

Oh I didn't think about live-performances. I was thinking of using their lyrics on visual arts.

I definitely agree with you on this; I've lost full touch with the industry. I don't remember lyrics or songs (and therefore I don't really remember to tune into music unless I'm being driven somewhere..until I buy a radio; THEN I will be in tune again~) although I think I've developed a decent habit to obsessively recite a chunk of the lyrics until I can write it down somewhere. I think that's because TV rarely tells me wtf is going on, musically. But google doesn't always fill in the blanks, either.

I think it's also reliant on the DJ's habits with how they use their air time, also. I know that they only have so much time in that window, to be on-air and bring up their material before they need to fill in the playlist/circulation for station's funds (which come from listener-count; the longer they speak, I guess they lose a few listeners? It depends on location/country. I personally stick to one station/Can't stand driving with station-hoppers.)

I do agree with you however. I've been rather displeased when a DJ fails to inform me of the singles previously aired. (I don't normally think about this, as I'm subscribed to Neilson's music newsletter..But I really think that it should become a popular practice for DJs to announce their playlist.)

DJs on the radio did announce names when I was younger (I'm old), but they seem to have strayed away from that these days. :C

even if you gave a less studious "quote was found on the internet..." without knowing the user handle, person's name/s, etc.  it shuold be given even if on the comments section, etc. :)

as an aspiring writer, i still make sure to give credit when i quote those around me, even if it's just one of their "personal" saying/s.  (even if it's just a joke phrase they used too.)

oh god, you have no idea how many times i'll go down the line with "a friend of my close best friend's ex girlfriend's mother...." kinda stuff just to sound remotely accurate with whom i know said things. XD  (by then i feel THAT is the joke moreso than the joke) with a joke i've heard. :o

while i don't always respond to the entirety of a post or journal type thing, i make it a point to try the majority-all of it so i don't put in some unread opinion/response to the topic alone, ya know? :)   (admittedly, there was a time when i did the reverse.  is why i'm more sensitive in trying to read thoroughly when i can. ^^)

My thought is that if it's a song lyrics, it doesn't matter because if I like what I read, I will youtube it.
If it's from a book, though, because I love books unconditionnably, I will credit the author.
Always looks prettier~

You make a good point, I must say.
Crediting won't kill anyone, afterall, yea?
Would spare me from "where're those lyrics from?". Bahaha.

I personally think everything should be credited. Quotes aren't worth less than images just because they're plain text. Someone made them, so they deserve credit!

I concur. It's extra frustrating when popular/professional artists do it. :/ I feel like they should know better.

As professional artists, they definitely should! "Everyone should know where the quote it's from" doesn't count as an argument at all in my opinion, and I even find it to be a bit disrespectful. Everyone should know that Darh Vader is Luke's father, but there are still people out there who don't. I don't go picking on them for their ignorance, either.

WAIT.
WAIIIT.
DARTH VADER IS LUKE'S---
DUDE, SPOILER WARNING!
:b j/k

But in all seriousness I agree. I shouldn't have to use Google to double check every artist for douchebaggery when I like their poems, description, etc. :|

I think it really depends. Lets say if I use a quote by Oscar Wilde, most people will know it is Oscar Wilde so it seems(Atleast to me) a bit pointless.

On the other hand the Brothers Strugatsky have a shit ton of fantastic quotes yet no one knows who they are, so crediting them at least for the sake of context is more in place.

But what about artists like :icongoldenwolf:? Most furry and anthro art appreciators know her work, but she deserves credit for her efforts regardless.

Well ofcourse, I dont know her and if I used one of her qoutes I'd give her credit.

When I made my take on the TMNT I asked the artist who influenced it if I could use a similar style, he said yes and I gave him credit for it. Sadly he's not around anymore.

I'm talking about quotes in this debate though, not style. :)

I hope by not around anymore he's just on hiatus... o.o
